Goal Setting is one of the most important things anyone who wishes to accomplish anything in life, must do.

So, last week I shared a blog post on why you need to set goals which explains in details the importance of goal setting in five quick steps.

Have you thought about what you want to be doing in a years’ time or five years’ time?

Are you clear about what your main objective at work is at the moment…?

Here’s one key thing you need to know in GOAL SETTING: MOTIVATION.

  • Set Goals That Motivate You.

Goals provide direction in your life and boost your motivation. Goals are like road maps; they get you from one point to another.

Goals provide the direction you need to reach your destination, the motivation to support you on your trip, and a way to measure your progress.

Imagine two sailors on the Ocean. One says “I want to go to the China” and it sets sails to the China, and it gets there.

The other one, never even thought about the fact that it is important to have direction, goes to the ocean, enjoys each day at a time and just “goes with the flow”. A few weeks later, it landed in Libya.

People who don’t set goals, tend to “go with the wind”, and believe that life happens to them, or that whatever they have or don’t have is due to a matter of “luck”.

But people who set goals enjoy the journey, they know where they are headed, and they work towards it, on a daily basis, until they reach their desired destination.

When you set goals for yourself, it is important that they motivate you: this means making sure that they are important to you and that there is worth in achieving them.

If you have little interest in the outcome, or they are irrelevant given the larger picture, then the chances of you putting in the work to make them happen are slim.

Motivation is key to achieving goals.

You are your own best motivator. Your motivation must come from within yourself.

Others may try to encourage you, but you are the only one who can attain what you desire.

You must convince yourself – you can! And yes, you CAN…

To make sure that your goal is motivating, write down why it’s valuable and important to you.

Ask yourself “If I am to share my goals with my friends and colleagues, what would I tell them to convince them it was a worthwhile goal”.

This can be used as a motivating value statement to help if you start to doubt yourself or lose confidence in your ability to actualize your goal or make it come to a reality.
