Aligning Marketing Promises With Sales Delivery

An ad promises a two-day turnaround. Sales quotes five. A landing page says “from ₦50,000.” The actual quote comes back at ₦120,000. Nothing in either statement is necessarily a lie, but the gap between what marketing promises and what sales delivers is one of the fastest ways to lose a prospect’s trust, often before a deal has even closed.

Why the handoff breaks trust

Prospects don’t experience your business as separate departments. To them, the ad, the landing page, the DM reply, and the sales call are one continuous conversation. When the story changes partway through, it doesn’t read as “a different team wrote that”  it reads as “they weren’t being straight with me.”

Where the mismatch usually shows up

  • Speed — marketing promises “fast” or “instant”; sales says “it depends on the queue”
  • Price — a headline price is the starting tier; the real quote depends on scope no one mentioned earlier
  • Scope — an ad implies a full service; sales clarifies it’s actually a smaller add-on package
  • Availability — a promotion runs live after the stated offer has technically expired
