Building Simple Customer Loyalty Systems

Loyalty programmes have a reputation for being expensive, complicated, and built for businesses much bigger than most SMEs. None of that is actually true. A loyalty system is just a deliberate way of recognising and rewarding the behaviour you want more of, and it can be built with a notebook and a WhatsApp broadcast list.

What loyalty actually rewards

Before building anything, decide what behaviour matters most to your business: repeat purchases, referrals, honest feedback, or advocacy. A loyalty system built around the wrong behaviour rewards the wrong customers.

Simple systems that don’t need software

  • A tiered thank-you system — a small gesture at the 3rd purchase, a bigger one at the 10th
  • A referral ask built into the process — asked at the moment a customer is happiest, not months later
  • A simple recognition system — publicly thanking long-term clients, with their permission
